OTTAVO GIORNO

La luce sembra improvvisamente accecarmi, intorno a me si alza una nebbia fittissima. La terra di chi non ha sepoltura è avvolta da una spessa coltre bianca. Cammino in direzione degli alberi, dei sassi, del ruscello, ma rimango fermo nella piana deserta. La luce diventa sempre più accecante, chiudo gli occhi e continuo a camminare. Il rumore dei miei passi si affievolisce e allo stesso tempo sento l'aria impregnarsi di un odore freddo e pungente. La nebbia sembra avvicinarsi, si chiude intorno a me, guardo a terra e non riesco più a vedere nemmeno i miei piedi. La sento posarsi sulle gambe come un telo, mi rende impossibile avanzare. Mi fermo e riconosco l'odore di disinfettante. Mi entra dalle narici e arriva ai polmoni. Inizio a tossire, mi sento soffocare. La nebbia si alza intorno a me, mi gira la testa e cado a terra. La coltre bianca si posa su di me e mi schiaccia sotto il suo peso. Nelle palpebre rivedo il prato, i sassi, l'acqua del fiume, mio padre con la divisa blu addosso e i guanti bianchi. Riapro gli occhi. La nebbia si è dissolta, la luce si è affievolita. Mi trovo in un letto, non il mio. 

Qualcuno mi stringe la mano, alzo lo sguardo e incontro gli occhi lucidi di mia madre. Poi lei si volta verso la porta e a gran voce chiama il dottore. Io osservo in silenzio e aspetto confuso delle spiegazioni. “Signor Yang, bentornato tra noi”.  Tornato? Da dove? E perchè sono in ospedale? Sento un dolore lancinante alla testa, avvicino la mano e percepisco una fasciatura sotto i polpastrelli. Guardo il medico e decido di porgli le mie domande. “Signor Yang, c’è stato un incendio nel quale lei è rimasto coinvolto. Le fiamme hanno fatto crollare l’edificio e le hanno causato una ferita al cranio. È stato necessario un intervento. È rimasto in coma per sette giorni “.

Recensione 第七天 

Una nebbia fittissima, una camera ardente, un viso malconcio e una fermata dell’autobus. Inizia così il romanzo “Il Settimo Giorno”. Attraverso un viaggio nell’Aldilà, il lettore è in grado di ricostruire gli eventi principali e più significativi della vita del protagonista Yang Fei. Dietro l’apparente narrazione in prima persona della vita del personaggio principale, si cela invece una vera e propria denuncia sociale. L’autore Yu Hua abilmente reinterpreta in chiave ironica alcuni degli aspetti più macabri e tragici della vita nella Cina a lui contemporanea. La politica del figlio unico, le  demolizioni forzate, il materialismo sfrenato della società moderna iper capitalista, sono solo alcune delle tematiche che si intrecciano con la trama principale. Senza dubbio una lettura fuori dal comune e in grado di far riflettere.

L' ottavo giorno

Ancora scosso dalla vista di mio figlio, le domande che riechegiavano nella mente mi impedivano la nitidezza del pensiero.
Era mia la colpa del suo prematuro arrivo?
Si sarebbe meritato qualcuno di migliore al suo fianco, non un misero ferroviere.
Ma in fin dei conti nessuno l'ha amato più di me.
Ero così perso nella mia confusione che non mi accorsi di quella esterna: una ragazza stava fuggendo dalla camera ardente.
Mai vista una cosa simile.
Ci misi un po', ma quando mi resi conto della situazione, mi alzai di scatto, urlandole di fermarsi. Quando vidi che non lo fece, decisi di seguirla fuori. La nebbia era così fitta che rischiai di perderla parecchie volte, continuando a chiederle di non proseguire.
Sembrava, però, sapere dove dirigersi.
Dopo un'ultima svolta, raggiunse quella che sarebbe dovuta essere la sua meta.
Si arrestò di colpo, il suo sguardo era in cerca d'altro.
Ma poi un sussurro:"Wu Chao".

Il settimo giorno di Yu Hua

Se avete intenzione di intraprendere una lettura diversa dal solito e che offra un punto di vista realistico in merito a una società a cui non siamo abituati, questo libro fa al caso vostro. 
Della trama preferiamo non rivelare troppo perché il libro merita di essere letto senza partire con nessun pregiudizio. 
L'autore di ''Il settimo giorno'', Yu Hua, critica in modo a volte ironico, a volte crudo, la società cinese moderna e tutti quei suoi aspetti macabri e ingiusti come per esempio le demolizioni forzate, la crudeltà della politica del figlio unico e il generale materialismo che porta le persone a compiere gesti estremi, come nel caso di Liu Mei, uno dei tanti personaggi analizzati nel libro. 
Consigliamo la lettura del libro a tutti coloro che vorrebbero affrontare una riflessione profonda in merito ad argomenti che possono sembrarci nuovi o estranei ma che in realtà sono la quotidianità di moltissime persone.

Ottavo giorno

Ho appena salutato mio padre, sto facendo una passeggiata quando il mio piede scivola su qualcosa.

Abbassando lo sguardo, noto che si tratta di un gratta e vinci e, più per abitudine che per altro, decido di darci un’occhiata.

Non posso credere ai miei occhi! 

Chi è stato così ingenuo e sconsiderato da perdere una vincita di 5000元?!

Decido di correre indietro da mio padre alla camera ardente, finalmente potremo permetterci la cremazione! 

Quando mi dicono che i soldi non basteranno per entrambi, mi cade il mondo addosso, per un attimo ci avevo creduto davvero!

All’improvviso, però, ho un’illuminazione, e mi rallegro: mio padre ed io non potremo essere cremati -questo è certo- ma almeno siamo insieme,mentre io conosco qualcuno che è stato separato da un infausto destino: il mio amico Wu Chao, che non può  raggiungere la sua Liu Mei.

A lui soldi basteranno sicuramente! In questo modo nessuno di noi sarà mai più solo.

Harrison Bergeron, written by Kurt Vonnegut in 1961, is a dystopian science fiction set in a future society in 2081. It presents an imaginary world where people are totally controlled by the system and everyone must be at the same intelligence, appearance and ability level. Indeed people who portray an higher intelligence are penalised by a handicap, for example beautiful girls are forced to wear ugly masks to conceal their beauty. The main purpose of this short story is to criticize the media and authority's control of society. 

We enjoyed this short story more then "The ones who walk away from Omelas" because the scene was much more dynamic due to the presence of dialogues  between the characters.

OMELAS
‘ The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas ‘ was published by Ursula K. Le Guin in 1973.
It’s a short story that belongs to the science-fiction genre. When we first read the title we thought the work was going to be scaring, but then the initial part made us change our minds.
Omelas is an utopian city in which people live harmoniously and in peace but their happiness depends on the condition of a child who lives in a cell.
In the end some citizens decide to leave this sort of fake paradise where their well-being is connected to the suffering of  the child.
Also in today’s society, similarly to the story, children and less privileged are exploited by the upper-middle class, for instance child labour in third world countries or the poor salaries of hard-working people.
According to our point of view the purpose of the author is to denounce social injustices and we believe she managed to reach her goal because even after our first reading we clearly understood the message behind the story.
We personally recommend the story specifically to young people, also because of its shortness and because it makes you think over social problems that surround us.

Reading the title “the ones who walk away from Omelas”, the reader could think that the main theme of this science-fiction story contains only a  negative message. 

Actually, by presenting a dystopian society, the author, Ursula Kroeber Le Guin, would transmit to the others a will of change in relation to the nowadays society. 

As a group we put ourselves in the Omelas’ people shoes because we found a strong comparison with our society. In fact, as in the real life the story presents the exploitation of the less privileged citizens thanks to the image of the naked child locked in a cellar. The upper class lives a remarkable and cheerful life ignoring the suffering of the working class, seen as an amount of imbeciles people, incapable to understand that they will never be at their same level.

However, at the end of the story the incredible detail described by the writer is that the only ones who realize the atrocious situation in which humanity is thrown are the adolescents. As a matter of fact, they decide to leave Omelas (imaginary name used to symbolize the evil, probably connected to the real city of Salem) and walk away from there, looking for a better future. 

In conclusion, we all believe that we should open our minds and react to this possible circumstance; so we recommend this short story to everyone because it isn’t to late to comprehend how the world can not never be.

The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas & Harrison Bergeron: did you enjoy the reading?

In our opinion in a society that seeks equality by lifting up the not gifted the pros and cons would be almost balanced.
If we talked about development in every subject we will surely get benefits because imagine a room full of scientists with Stephen Hawkin's intelligence, we could have an amazing progress in this topic;
or imagine a society where there wouldn't be a concept of beauty nor ethnic differences: the racism wouldn't exist.
But in the other hand, who can prove the existence of a supreme intelligence?
Who can decide an intelligence parameter?
No one.
If we all had the same mind there would be a lack of uniqueness that I think is the worst thing for a society that could only go on thanks to the originality of it's people.

“The ones who walk away from Omelas” is a dystopian story by Ursula Kroeber Le Guin about a town called Omelas where everyone is happy apart from one child. We like this short story because it makes you think about the behavior of people and their values. In this city nobody has problems because everything is organized. The system works thank to a child who is locked alone in a room.
It cannot be helped in any way because otherwise the society would fall apart.We find interesting the fact that people understand that the happiness and the beauty of their city depends on the pain of a single child. If we were in their shoes probably we would leave it alone without changing the system because we think that common good is more important than one life.

how important is it to think?

Handicapping gifted people would make the society oppressive and unethical

freedom and critical thinking would be erased but at the same time enhancing with a biotechnological  technique would be just as distructive.

On the one hand society could experience an enormous progress in many different fields, such as medicine, engineering or economy and some people could accede to several possibilities normally reserved to the gifted people.

On the other hand it is unethical because some people would be given extraordinary abilities that other people should work much harder to achieve.

if by handicapping people their freedom to think is reduced the same goes with people whose abilities are enhanced. Also if in a world where all people are handicapped everyone tends to be comprehensive with each other and empathic, a society in which people have enhanced abilities harsh competition and selfishness would spread instead.

In 'Harrison Bergeron" society is equal, though not in a metaphorical way, but in a rather creepy way. The only thing that is the equality target are not rights, but intelligence; every single person is intelligent in the same way, or maybe, ignorant in the same way. In order to achieve this, people who are gifted - compared to others - get handicapped, so everyone is mentally the same.
It is pretty clear that a society like this can not work, because ignorance portrayed in a massive society-like scale, would simply damage the system.
So, would a society of not gifted people getting "lifted up" better? Well yes, but actually no.
In fact, compared to the distopian society of "Harrison Bergeron" it is indeed better; however, a society without diversity can not be called society, but it can be defined better as a "gigantic group of Doppelgangers"   E & V
