“They had used some of the money you sent to give him a good funeral”.
When Akuna was in America she used to support her parents economically in Nigeria. This made her family think that she had succeeded in making success and to realize the so-called "American dream". In reality what for them could be "so much" for his new life in Usa was little. In fact, she didn't feel she had achieved success, on the contrary she struggled to feel alive in a context where people worried only about the less important things, it was as if her problems were wrapped in her neck ready to choke her. The moment of the shower is a moment of epiphany, after which she decides to write her parents. In the shower she realizes that she is not happy and chooses to get in contact with her family, with her old identity. She feels displaced and not understood by the only person who seems to care about her. After she becomes aware of the distance between the boy’s culture and hers, she looks for her family, probably to find some comfort.
